We went to a marvelous Christmas concert last night: organ, trumpet, flute, harp, and a magnificent soprano intertwining melodies in spectacular holiday spectacle.
The audience was invited to join in a half-dozen carols and we rose to the occasion. I loved that portion of the show more than most, for I have the gift of contralto. The concert hall resounded with the blend of thousands of full melodious voices and hearts.
I prize harmonizing above all in music. I think that says a lot about me in life. However, I don’t want to join a choir and rigorously practice with sheets of music tumbling with notes like the ants foraging for food in our kitchen. I like to initiate and improvise in tune, freely and unbidden.

I like to pick my own part.

Isn’t it interesting that what you like to do with music, is also how I suspect you like to live your life…initiate and improvise, freely and unbidden, picking your own part!

  2. Thanks for acknowledging the metaphor, CAM. One of clearest memories of my father’s wake was the pervasive comment among his church members and friends was his affinity for harmony. It is great to have inherited his gift.
